Drake Hayes grew up in Acuff, Texas where he was exposed to a wide variety of music from a very early age. It came as no surprise when he took a strong interest beginning in his early teens. Throughout middle and high school Drake began playing bass guitar, guitar and harmonica. While in school, Drake was a serious player with strong dedication who was quickly noticed by other musicians. Soon after, Drake was touring the national circuit with several top acts including Mark McKinney, Matt Kimbrow, The Proud Cut Ponies and Jeremy Stedding.
As exciting as touring and playing with other acts was, Drake wanted to chase his own dream. So he began to write and cultivate his own material. Before too long, he was ready to start his own band.
In 2014, Drake met Matthew Harber, an accomplished guitar and pedal steel player freshly imported from Austin, Texas. The two hit it off and immediately began to scout for a rhythm section. As luck would have it, they quickly met up with two talented students from South Plains College and formed the Drake Hayes Band. Shane Johnson from Hereford, Texas plays a mean bass and Jason Borocio from Belton, Texas is a steady force on drums.
After the formation of the Drake Hayes Band, all four musicians quickly began writing and composing a catalog of original material as well as putting together an impressive set list ranging from old-school tunes of Waylon Jennings to modern tracks from Randy Rogers. The band’s different styles and varied influences have come together to create a unique and powerful sound in the world of Texas Country. If you have a chance to see them perform, it’s a show that should not be missed.
You know you've got a great country band when you call up the band leader and arrange for a gig while he's on his tractor.
